The Ghost Card

Here's a card trick I like.  I must give credit to Gabe Fajuri in his book "Pick A Card - Any Card", page 26.

1.  Begin by placing a duplicate card in the deck.  Place the two duplicate cards on top.  Shuffle but maintain on top.

2.  Force the top card to spec no. 1.  I like the overhand shuffle force.  Don't allow any of the specs to see the card.  Place it into an envelope and secure the envelope.  I usually place it under something, say a book.

3.  The new top card should be the duplicate card.  Force it to the second spec.  I like to shuffle it to the bottom and then force it using the Hindu shuffle.  I say to let me demonstrate and I do a Hindu shuffle but it is a fake Hindu shuffle because I pull cards from the middle.  I will say "stop" and then show them the card.  Then I will do another fake shuffle and say "stop."  The card will be different.  This solidifies the randomness of the shuffle.  Doing it a third time is optional.  I then say, "Are you ready, now we'll do it for real."  I do a real Hindu shuffle and force the bottom card.

4.  So far, I have deviated from the explanation in the book only in dialog and method of forcing.  Now I deviate completely.  Have a spec write the identity of the card on a small piece of paper.

5.  Have another spec (the same one is ok) set fire and burn the piece of paper.  This diversion gives me plenty of time to palm the card from where it was (probably on the top or bottom of the deck) and put it into my pocket.

6.  My patter now will run something along the lines of:  "Just as that piece of paper has disappeared, so has your card."

7.  Someone will probably grab the deck and look for the card.  Of course, they won't find it - it's in my pocket.

8.  Next, wait for someone to suggest looking in the envelope.  Someone always does.  I have never had to say, for example, "Wait, what about the envelope?"

This trick always gets a good response from Chinese teenagers along with their parents.
